Over ten years ago, Kim Hye Yong, doctor at the South Hwanghae Provincial General Hospital, came across an interesting raw material while studying data of foods good for human health.
As she intensified research into the material, she came to know that it was difficult to produce it under the conditions of her country.
So she directed her efforts to finding out a plant which could be used as a substitute.
One day during her stay in Pyongyang on a business trip, she came to the Grand People’s Study House to read relevant data, where she met a man from Kosan County in Kangwon Province. He was also interested in what she was reading.
While having a talk with him, she learned that Sasamorpha chiisanensis could be used as a substitute and he had an experience of making an extract from the plant.
The plant is used in the treatment of fever, edema, various kinds of bleeding, eye diseases, burn, stomach and duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, tonsillitis, asthma and diseases.
She decided to make a food conducive to promoting human health with this plant.
But research into it was not all plain sailing. She tried to find out manufacturing method by changing the temperature and time, only to experience repeated failures.
Other doctors at the hospital assisted her.
After painstaking efforts, she developed a health food and proved its merits through sufficient clinical tests.
It was named “Black Salt” and granted a patent.
It has been highly appreciated at national sci-tech festivals, presentations and exhibitions. It is highly popular among consumers.
“It is just a beginning. I will make redoubled efforts to develop more health foods with ‘Black Salt’ and thereby contribute to promoting the people’s health,” she said.
