In April a meeting was held at the Hall of Culture in Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province, to award the Order of the National Flag 2nd Class to Kim Song Hwan living at Neighbourhood Unit No. 9 of Ponnamu-dong in the city.
The 74-year-old is a native of the province. As a child Kim often climbed nearby mountains following his father, and knew that fruit trees seldom grew in his mountainous home village.
But as he witnessed various kinds of fruits transported to the people in his northern inland region, he felt the benevolence of the country and wished that the villagers would eat fruits grown in their locality.
After retirement he began to plant and grow fruit trees around his home. Inspired by him, many gave him a helping hand.
Senior villagers praised him and shared their experiences in fruit-tree cultivation with him. Every year researchers from the Pomology Institute supplied good species of saplings to him and visited the city to render assistance to him.
In the period Samjiyon was renovated into a modern mountainous town by a state measure and Kim’s family was provided with a decent home gratis. This motivated him to harden his revolve to do more good jobs for the country.
He reclaimed some vacant hillside areas and grew young fruit trees. Thanks to his wisdom and strenuous efforts, various trees such as apple and pear trees bore sweet fruits.
The state honoured him in recognition of his good deeds.
