People’s Artist Choe Chang Ho works at the Korean painting production unit of the Mansudae Art Studio. He is known as an artist of character especially for flamboyant brushwork, passionate and strong colouring, unique composition and sharp tonal gradation.
Hailing from Onsong County, North Hamgyong Province in the country’s northeastern part, he has mostly depicted Mt Paektu (2 750m), the ancestral mountain of Korea and sacred mountain of the Korean revolution, as well as sceneries in the northern areas. Among his works are Korean paintings “Lake Chon on Mt Paektu,” “Meandering Amnok River” and “In the Theatre of the Revolution.”
They give a weighty and solemn description to the stout spirit and mystery of Mt Paektu through the skillful application of the single-stroke technique, a method inherent in Korean painting, capturing the imagination of the viewers.
He has also created many works that portray the people’s creative working life.
He has won nine gold medals and two special awards at national exhibitions. He has been honoured at over 80 international fine arts shows and exhibitions, with his Korean painting “Lake Chon on Mt Paektu in February” snatching the best award at the 11th international fine arts exhibition in Beijing.
During his 40-odd-year career, he has painted hundreds of works, some of which is on the state’s collection list.
