Mt Kuwol is located in the northwestern part of South Hwanghae Province.
The mountain’s southern slope is bounded by Anak County’s Woljong-ri, Samchon County’s Churung-ri and Kohyon-ri, where there is a habitat of water-deers of Mt Kuwol.
They are distributed at the foot of the mountain that forms a gentle slope where dwarf trees and shrubs grow.
The bushes and hollow places there serve as a shelter for the animal to spend daytime. It seldom gets out of its area of action.
It resembles an ordinary deer, but it is much smaller. An adult male has no horns, but a pair of upper canine teeth which are projected about 5cm out of its lips.
It is 95 to 120cm long and weighs 14 to 20 kg.
The water-deer is so impatient and cowardly that it always watches around even when it grazes. And it doesn’t stay for a long time but moves around during feeding activity.
A female usually gives birth to two or three fawns, or up to six.
The mother does not keep her litter together in a place, but separates them in different places at certain intervals. After foraging for food in other places, it comes back to feed the fawns. They are usually kept hidden in a place for about a week, and they never come out of their shelters unless their mother comes and calls them.
The water-deer is an indigenous sub-species of the DPRK, and the Mt Kuwol area is a typical habitat of it.
