The Koguryo Dynasty is the first feudal state of Korea which existed between 277 B.C. and A.D. 668.
Koguryo, a powerful country with a 1,000-year-long history, had highly developed stockbreeding industry.
Researcher Hwang Kum Sok at the History Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences said horse breeding shows well the development of stockbreeding of Koguryo, and continued:
"Many horses of fine breed were raised in Koguryo with a large territory, which had to fight fierce battles against foreign invaders.
Koguryo had a good steed called 'Koru' in its early days, which was called 'Sinma', that is, a 'mysterious horse'.
There was also a horse of peculiar breed called 'Kwahama'.
It was so short that people could ride it under fruit trees. Hence--the name. Though it was a pony, Kwahama was strong enough to run all day long and it also had a good point of climbing mountains easily.
Koguryo people considered it to be very precious and sent it to other countries as gift.
In addition, they also bred a lot of horses that were tall and ran well."
In Koguryo, pigs, dogs and chicken were raised and domestic animals such as cows, sheep and goats put to pasture.
The development of stockbreeding in Koguryo actively promoted the strengthening of the national power, that of military muscle in particular.
