Recently the Japanese government claimed that the 1972 China-Japan Joint Statement which mentioned that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China is “not legally binding.” The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China firmly rejected it as a challenge to the political foundation of China-Japan relations.
In 1972, Japan explicitly pledged that “The Government of Japan recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China”, she highlighted and claimed that the China-Japan Joint Statement is certainly legally binding as the 1978 Treaty of Peace and Friendship Between China and Japan affirmed that the China-Japan Joint Statement constitutes the basis for relations of peace and friendship between the two countries and that the principles set out in that statement should be strictly observed.
She stressed that China firmly opposes Japan violating its promise of adhering to the one-China principle, challenging the political foundation of China-Japan relations and sending a significantly wrong message to the “Taiwan independence” forces regarding the Taiwan question.
She ended by urging the Japanese side to abide by the principles and spirit of the four political documents with China, act prudently on the Taiwan question and honor its promise of adhering to the one-China principle with concrete actions.
