Tonghung Kindergarten in Central District, Pyongyang, has been successful since 2019 at the municipal children’s paduk (go) tournament, a biannual event that is held every spring and autumn.
In 2024 the kindergarten won both events.
The credit goes to Mun Jong Gum.
It was over ten years ago that she was appointed teacher at the kindergarten after graduating from Pyongyang Teachers Training College.
At the time paduk education among children was being popularized nationwide as the traditional folk game was supposed to promote their intellectual development.
Mun Jong Gum read about paduk in reference books and multimedia in search of how to teach children paduk to suit their mind.
She found a solution in multimedia, and worked out some by herself for class.
In addition, she taught children super speed reading, mental calculation and counting.
This gradually helped children improve their power of concentration, observation, thought, analysis and judgement and enabled them to read a match by quickly calculating both their own stones and opponents’ ones.
Her efforts bore fruit.
Kim Jin A from the kindergarten won a technical prize at the 2019 Pyongyang municipal spring tournament, in which she often turned the tide of the matches with clever moves and got the better of the opponents whenever she encountered setbacks.
Since then, the kindergarten has won over ten technical prizes in the tournaments.
