The Global Times in a recent article categorically rejected the Japanese notion of “threat from China”, an allegation that Japan tries so hard to disseminate through its draft white paper on defense 2025.
In the draft white paper Japan defined the military action of China in 2024 as the unprecedentedly greatest strategic challenge and argued that the military operation taking place around Taiwan in the course of China’s rapid growth in terms of nuclear, missile, naval and air combat capabilities signifies China’s endeavours to enhance its actual war capacity. The paper asserted that the issue of the South China Sea has a direct bearing on peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
In relation to that, a Chinese expert pointed out that accusations against China are aimed at causing more and more troubles to exaggerate the “threat from China” and that Japan’s ulterior motive behind its deliberate fabrication of “threat from neighbours” and “threat from China” is to find an excuse for increasing its defense budget.
It is hard for Japan’s ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party to explain the massive increase in Japan’s defense expenditure without exaggerating the threat from outside, and therefore it spreads the notion of “threat from China” through the annual white paper on defense, hyping that Japan’s defense capability should be increased to cope with the threat and ever-aggravating security environment surrounding Japan, the expert noted.
