Mozambique is located in the southeastern part of Africa.
It had been under the colonial rule of foreign aggressors since the 16th century and was reduced to a complete colony in 1700.
The Mozambican people, who had suffered a lot under the colonial rule for a long time, waged a vigorous struggle to achieve freedom and independence.
General strikes of workers and mass uprisings were staged in different parts of the country and the struggle got fiercer as time passed.
The Mozambique Liberation Front launched an all-people armed uprising in September 1964. This event marked the beginning of the Mozambican people’s liberation war for abolishing colonial rule and winning national independence and sovereignty.
The Mozambicans achieved independence through a protracted struggle and founded the People’s Republic on June 25 1975. It was renamed the Republic of Mozambique in November 1990.
Through the national liberation war which lasted for over ten years, the Mozambican people keenly felt that armed struggle is the only just way for achieving freedom and independence and their destiny must be carved out by themselves. They are now achieving the prosperity and development of the country by their own efforts.
Agriculture accounts for a large proportion of the country’s GNP.
Last May, the Mozambican president called for the development of agriculture, saying that the government is taking measures to increase agricultural production with the aim of strengthening the country’s food security and economic self-sufficiency.
He said that the farmers have strived to increase food production despite all challenges including unfavourable weather conditions, adding that young people should actively advance into the agricultural field in the future.
Recently, the government has announced a plan for building an oil refinery for economic development.
The facility, scheduled to be completed within the next two years, will produce 200 000 barrels of fuel a day. The Mozambican president said that if the oil refinery is built, it can not only meet the domestic demand for fuel but also enable fuel export, adding that the country is planning to build pipelines linked to a neighbouring country to this end.
In recent years, Mozambique has been strengthening cooperation with many countries including East Timor and Tanzania.
The DPRK established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Mozambique on June 25 1975.
