The Songchon chestnut known as a local speciality is a delicious, late-ripening variety belonging to the Pyongyang chestnut, with the inner skin of its fruit easily peeling off.
It spreads throughout the Songchon area of South Phyongan Province.
It grows slowly and its side branches and twigs tend to droop.
It has relatively high resistance to cold.
The tree, registered as a living monument, is believed to be planted around 1947.
The Songchon chestnut tree is 12m tall on average, 1.5m and 1.3m round at the root neck and the chest height respectively, and 10m wide at the crown.
Flowers bloom from mid-June to the end of the month, and the fruits ripen between late September and early October.
A round and small chestnut-bur mostly contains three chestnuts and sometimes two.
The chestnut is elliptical with a pointed tip, and its bark is light brown and oily. Each nut weighs 7-8 grams.
Dried chestnut contains 64.5% in starch, 13.4% in sugariness and 9.6% in protein.
The Songchon chestnut is of academic and economic significance.
