In celebration of the New Year, Ponnamu Street in the city of Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province, lit up with more than 60 pieces of snow and ice sculptures, adding more to the festive mood.
A standout was a snow-and-ice sculpture that depicts the future of the area around Mt Pukphothae, an intended ski resort.
The Phothae area in the city is suitable for sports- and experience-themed mountain tourism as it has heavy snowfall and proper geographic and climatic features.
In July last year, when he visited Samjiyon to inspect its construction project, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un unveiled a plan to develop the city into a model mountainous town in the northern part of the country and a characteristic all-season combined mountainous tourist resort, so as to fully satisfy the cultural and emotional needs of the people and revitalize international tourism. The grand nature of the Mt Paektu area dotted with primeval forests and rolling mountains is part of our precious resources, of which we can feel proud, he said, adding that it is needed to build a tourist resort in the world-famous Mt Paektu for our people and the world people and make tourism a major driving force for regional development.
Many countries around the world are encouraging investment in mountain tourism in a bid to meet the growing needs for tourism and inject impetus into the regional economy by making the most of the mountainous areas occupying a large part of the earth’s surface.
The DPRK is channelling a nationwide effort into developing the Phothae area into a fine mountainous resort.
