Works are in full swing to expand the area under cultivation in different parts of the country.
“In order to increase grain production in our country, where the area of arable land is limited, we must increase the per-hectare yield by arousing the enthusiasm for scientific farming and, at the same time, constantly expand the area under cultivation. This is another way of achieving self-sufficiency in food supply,” said an official of the Agricultural Commission.
Unsan County of North Phyongan Province, Sunchon City of South Phyongan Province and many other regions and rural communities have made painstaking efforts to bring more land under cultivation and improve its fertility, and restore the land that was washed away. As a result, substantial progress has been made in expanding the area of arable land.
As it has many mountains and streams but a small area of arable land, Hochon County of South Hamgyong Province has given priority to the work of improving streams and thereby bringing more land under cultivation.
The county improved the streams in the areas of Suui-ri and Jangpha-ri to bring over 10 hectares of land under cultivation. And in the end of last year it also improved the streams in Yangumphyong-ri, making it possible to sow seeds on more than 30 hectares of new land.
Chongjin City of North Hamgyong Province and Hoechang County of South Phyongan Province are tapping new land reserves as much as possible.
Meanwhile, Hwangju County of North Hwanghae Province reclaimed the vacant land around a reservoir, while Sinhung County of South Hamgyong Province put new soil on the fields that had been washed away by flooding and applied a large quantity of homemade manure to increase the area of grain cultivation.
The Kangnam Farm in Kumchon County, North Hwanghae Province, realigned small patches of dry fields, removed stones from the fields and conducted river-improvement projects.
The local farmers said that they were surprised to see the small patches of land they reclaimed amounting to so large an area when put together.
