Yodok County of South Hamgyong Province is predominantly surrounded by high hills in all directions. One of the mountains rises over 1 500 metres above sea level.
This mountainous region has recently undergone changes beyond recognition with the construction of nice farmhouses, small-scale power stations and others.
Rimphyong-ri is an out-of-the-way place where mountains stand shoulder to shoulder. In the remote village modern terraced and single-storeyed houses have been built to make the residential district look like a beautiful picture.
Om Hyok Chol, a member of workteam No.1 of the local farm, boasted that his family moved to a nice terraced house and got a good share at the meeting of year-end distribution of grains and income last year.
The locals are running a finishing building materials base built by their own efforts where they produce various kinds of blocks, bricks, coating materials and roofing tiles in different colours, using the locally abundant raw materials. They supply their products to the housing construction sites in the county.
The county has built about a dozen of small-scale power stations fed by mountain streams. The power stations maintain regular power supply to the rural villages even in drought season.
The public welfare and catering facilities such as hostel, health complex and noodle house have been newly built or renovated to meet the convenience of the inhabitants and guests from other regions and satisfy their demand for material and cultural life.
Everywhere in the county voices of happiness can be heard. An old man said that his four children received new houses at the same time. A young farmer said that he became a university student under the study-while-you-work system. A married couple of farmers boasted that they sent a photo taken in front of the new house to their son who is serving the army.
Kim Kum Phyo, an elderly man who has lived in the county since he was born before the country’s liberation, said with great emotion that his mountainous county is increasingly turning from rural to urban under the benevolent care of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
The eye-opening changes in the mountainous region have been made under the leadership of the WPK that is ushering in a new era of rural development.
Local inhabitants say in unison that their county would have more to boast about when modern regional-industry factories are to be built.
