The Academy of Agricultural Science has developed a new technique for producing biodegradable paper for soil covering in an industrial way.
Until now, polyethylene film has been used worldwide for mulching cultivation. However, its widespread and sustained use resulted in a large amount of residues remaining in the soil, which led to a drop in per-hectare yield and especially soil contamination.
To prevent this, research activities have been carried out to develop a self-degradable kind of covering film. At present different kinds of biodegradable mulching films are in use.
The biodegradable mulching paper developed by the academy pays off in practice.
First of all, the environment-friendly paper regulates soil temperature to protect crops from damages by high temperature, prevents soil contamination, erosion and loss of nutrients and reduces labour-intensive farming processes such as weeding and ploughing.
Besides, the source of its raw materials is abundant as it is made from cereal straw or reeds and, in particular, it can be produced also in city and county paper mills.
In cooperation with scientists at the Paper Engineering Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, the researchers confirmed the possibility of industrial application of the technique and succeeded in the domestic production of a coating material capable of lowering the water absorption of the paper.
They say that the use of this biodegradable paper in maize and soybean cultivation makes it possible to safely increase per-hectare yield in the face of disastrous abnormal weather and that it degrades in the soil with the lapse of time to change into a soil improvement agent.
After proving the scientific accuracy and applicability of the paper through several experiments, the researchers built a foundation for the industrial production of the paper in Mundok County of South Phyongan Province and Sinwon County of South Hwanghae Province.
The Academy of Agricultural Science is currently working to apply the self-degradable paper production technique into wider use as the area under mulching cultivation based on the paper is on the increase in different cities and counties.
