Ridding the planet of plastic pollution constitutes an important contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including those on climate action, sustainable production and consumption, protection of oceans and repairing ecosystems and retaining biodiversity.
For decades, plastics have come into extensive use in many regions of the world and in many different fields, causing environmental pollution and having effects on humans and other living organisms.
Globally, an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems each year, and the annual social and environmental cost of plastic pollution ranges between US$ 300 billion and US$ 600 billion.
Plastic pollution exacerbates the deadly impacts of the triple planetary crisis: the crisis of climate change, the crisis of nature, land and biodiversity loss, and the crisis of pollution and waste.
Therefore, the United Nations Environment Programme set forth the theme for this year’s World Environment Day (June 5) as “Beat Plastic Pollution,” with an eye to ending plastic pollution globally, and calls on countries to spotlight the growing scientific evidence on the impacts of plastic pollution and drive momentum to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink plastics use.
In the DPRK plastic waste and all other waste materials are treated and recycled to keep them from polluting the ecological environment of the country.
The Law of the DPRK on Treating Waste Materials and the Law of the DPRK on Recycling were adopted in 2007 and 2020 respectively, and they have been amended and supplemented to suit the changes in actual conditions.
Amid the in-depth research into recycling plastic waste, the findings are introduced into reality to bring about great economic profits. Many units in the country have established production lines fed by waste plastics to turn out different plastic goods.
Meanwhile, publicity activities are conducted by means of books, sci-tech information, TV programmes and media to raise the public awareness of plastic pollution and environmental protection.
