Paektu, rising 2 750m above sea level, is the highest mountain in Korea and one of its most celebrated mountains. In winter the foot of the mountain presents unique scenes, with Rimyongsu Falls among them.
The meaning of the name Rimyongsu is a village where shoals of chars are swimming in crystal-clear water.
Consisting of nine main streams, the waterfall has myriads of small falls running down among the streams.
Just like rolls of silk, it cascades down the protruding rocks along the cliffs with a cozy-looking pavilion on it, forming various streams.
As it stems from Lake Chon at the summit of Mt Paektu, the underground water flows through the crevices of basalt rocks. Its water amount and temperature remain constant all year round.
It evokes different sentiments in every season, but it is all the more spectacular in winter.
It looks like a giant ice wall in this season. Some streams are still moving and water is running down among icicles. The most spectacular thing is that the surrounding forest area turns into a hoarfrost forest cloaked in mist rising from the underground water that collides with cold air.
Seen from afar, the valley looks like a cape worn by a dancing fairy, and seen from nearby, it bears clusters of silvery beads dazzling against sunrays.
The rare waterfall is under protection as a national natural monument.
