Hoeryong Kim Ki Song Senior Middle School in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province, stands out by having produced 12 heroes including four heroes of the DPRK.
Among the heroes are those who sacrificed their lives for defending the country during the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953) and performed distinguished services in postwar reconstruction and socialist construction.
The school focuses on encouraging its students to learn from the ennobling spiritual world of the heroes.
In particular, it introduces them to how the heroes had studied and lived in their school days.
To take an example, they learn about Yun Tong Hyon, a twice Labour Hero titleholder, who excelled in academic performance, showed unusual concern over classmates and loved his hometown.
He planted a tree in the campus the day before he left for military service.
Other heroes, namely Cha Jae Ok, Kim Pong Su and Kim Song Hwa, were all devoted to their home village and school.
Headmaster Ri Jong Il and teachers often say to students:
We have many historic sites and natural monuments in our city. During the Japanese military occupation of Korea (1905-1945), the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) worked at the Ssoksaegol Secret Camp in Hakpho-ri in late June 1931 as he was stepping up the preparations in real earnest for the anti-Japanese armed resistance. The Undusan Fort and the Hoeryonghaeng Fortress are old fortresses built by our ancestors against foreign invaders in the period of the Koguryo dynasty (277 BC-AD 668) and the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), respectively. In addition, we have sites of signal-fire posts and indigenous Hoeryong chestnut trees and Hoeryong white apricot trees. Heroism does not come out of nothing. Just as a thousand-mile journey begins with a single step, heroism sprouts and develops in every moment of an ordinary life. You can become as good as the heroes only when you develop love of your parents, brothers and sisters, friends and villagers, as well as your hometown and your school.
Therefore, students strive to follow in the heroes’ footsteps and volunteer to do good things for the country.
Before graduation, they plant trees in the campus and in nearby mountains as a token of their resolve to carry on the spirit of the heroes.
