Son Su Rim of the DPRK claimed the women’s 60kg category title at IBA Youth World Boxing Championships 2024, winning a trophy and a gold medal.
When the event got started, however, Son was not among the odds-on favourites.
Most of the contestants in her category, 24 in all, had a brilliant career.
Among them were reigning youth champions in Europe, America and Asia, an African hopeful and others who topped the local rankings.
It was literally a competition of young aces.
Son fought a preliminary with the reigning European youth champion.
But she undauntedly turned in an offensive performance coupled with tactful counteroffensive, demolishing her opponent 5-0, who had asserted she would finish the bout in the first round.
Son went on to thump the reigning American champion in the quarterfinals and the African hopeful in the semifinals, both five to nil.
Who she met in the final was the reigning Asian champion, whose coach swore her athlete was poised for trophy in physical and technical terms.
But Son beat her down 3-2.
After the bout, the coach appreciated Son’s victory, saying both were alike in the first and second rounds but Son overpowered her rival in the third round by displaying tremendous spiritual strength. He credited the Korean athlete’s victory to her spiritual ability.
With triumph in her international debut, Son was born into a family of workers in Pyongyang’s Taesong District.
She was scouted by a boxing coach from the then April 25 Sports Team. Unusually clever and tenacious, she put in so much effort to improve her skills and cultivate fortitude and perseverance after she was enrolled at the team.
Every evening, she would review her daily training asking herself if she worked hard to push her limits of ability.
Thus, she began to excel at local competitions in a few years.
With her mind set on a higher goal, Son is still working hard in the training ground.
