There is a place called Wangbamnamugol (large chestnut tree valley) in Jokhyon-dong, Kangso District, Nampho.
As its name denotes, the valley is thickly covered with large chestnut trees. The dense forest of large chestnut trees is associated with the devotion of Pak Yong, a former mountain workteam leader.
Nearly 30 years ago he was discharged from military service as a colonel and volunteered to work at the workteam there.
The first thing he did was planting large chestnut trees.
He was a beginner to tree-planting, but he picked out stones and dug ditches with his colleagues. Then they planted seedlings of large chestnut trees on one hand and, on the other, grafted shoots of large chestnut trees onto native species. However hard they tried, things did not go well.
Many workteam members complained that it would be better to plant acacias which do not require much care.
“Of course, acacia is a good species and it is difficult to grow large chestnut trees,” Pak said to his fellows. “But let’s plant large chestnut trees which would give benefits for a long time.”
His words tugged at their heartstrings.
From the next day on they spent most of their time in the mountains.
Nearly ten years of tenacious efforts came to fruition—a tree which they had grafted several years ago bore 12 burrs.
Gradually, native chestnut trees were turned into large chestnut trees, and the trees they planted every year grew taller.
Besides, Pak planted saplings between the big trees.
To the people who were wondering why he was doing so, he said, “A tree will degenerate over the years and the amount of its fruits will also decrease. If we plant young trees in advance, the coming generations will continuously get benefits from them.”
In general the rotation period of grafted trees is tens of years.
Indeed, Pak has devoted himself to the mountains.
Today many people in the valley are tending the forest with sincerity, following his example.
