Jangsong-ri is a tideland village in Ongjin County, South Hwanghae Province in the country’s west coast. It prides itself on fish ponds teeming with catfish as big as forearm.
A few years ago the villagers turned out to build fish ponds. Some of them travelled a long distance to obtain fries while others stayed up late at night to learn scientific and technical knowledge related to fish farming.
However, they failed to do freshwater fish farming as the quantity of water decreased due to abnormal weather conditions. It was difficult to secure water for the fish ponds, given that it was not easy to provide water for farming. But last year they heard welcome news that a nationwide project of desalinating Lake Kangnyong had been completed successfully and the water from the lake could be supplied to their village.
The local residents, who had been worried about water, danced in joy when the water from the lake came to their village. And they filled the ponds, which they had not benefited from after their construction, with that water. Soon afterwards they started to breed catfish.
Since then, the village has boasted of fish farming.
Fish farming has always been the main topic of the letters villagers send to their married daughters in other localities or to their sons in military service. And when they hold ceremonies, fishes from the ponds are always served on the table.
“We seldom had freshwater fishes in the past, but now we are content with our own,” say villagers in unison.
