Uam-dong, Sonbong District, Rason Municipality, is the northernmost tip of the DPRK.
The roadway that starts in the capital city of Pyongyang comes to an end at that place that marks the confluence of the Tuman River and the East Sea of Korea.
Thori, far from the seat of Uam-dong, is a small village of a little more than 30 households, most of which consist of employees of the Uam agricultural and livestock production branch station under the Sonbong fuel service station and their family members.
But there is a welcome “guest” in the remote village. It is a vehicle that transports dairy products to the children in the village every day.
One day several years ago, the villagers were all excited when they were told a vehicle carrying dairy products would arrive at their village.
The whole village turned out waiting for the vehicle.
After a while, a voice cried out with excitement: “It is coming!”
The vehicle pulled up and Jon Kwang Ho, manager of the Sonbong Children’s Foodstuff Factory, jumped out, getting himself surrounded by the villagers.
The villagers were surprised to hear that the vehicle was set to run a long distance to carry fresh dairy products for several children in the village.
That day all the villagers including the parents of the children who received dairy products were overwhelmed by gratitude to the country.
From then on, it has become part and parcel of their daily life to welcome the vehicle.
It has been years since then. There are now three children in the village eligible for dairy products.
But the vehicle still runs over 40 kilometres for them.
It happened a few months ago.
It was so snowy and stormy that it was difficult to see ahead.
The villagers guessed that the vehicle might be very late or fail to make it on such a cold day. But they could not but cast their eyes to the driveway.
Around the midday, a snow-clad lorry was getting into the village with the familiar hoot.
The villagers ran towards the vehicle and said to the driver: “It doesn’t matter at all even if children skip dairy goods a day.”
“It is the childcare policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea to provide the children across the country with nutritious foodstuffs such as dairy products at state expense,” replied the driver.
