Having long planned to turn the capital city of Pyongyang into a centrepiece of Korean-style civilization and a city of people, the Workers' Party of Korea set forth a programme for building 50 000 flats in the city at its Eighth Congress in January 2021.
The number of 50 000 flats was enormous and it was not an easy job to build 10 000 flats annually for five years under the country's situation at that time.
But the WPK decided to build 10 000 flats in the capital every year during the five-year plan for national economic development so as to resolve the housing problem in the main.
Accordingly, 10 000 flats have been built and inaugurated every year since 2021. In addition, the modern Pothong Riverside Terraced Houses District, a residential quarter in the Taephyong area, Jonwi Street, Saeppyol Street and other streets and houses sprang up, and the 50 000-flat plan was overfulfilled with nearly 60 000 flats built.
What is more remarkable is that every project was modern, unique and updated each year with an eye to a fresher and more advanced phase.
Once the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un sat together with senior Party and government officials and told them that the 50 000-flat programme is his long-cherished desire and he would take on the programme.
Prior to the inauguration of Hwasong Street, he said picturing in mind the people who would be pleased to move into the fine new flats: We should build 50 000 flats in Pyongyang without fail during the period of the five-year plan and, therefore, settle the housing problem of the capital. This is what I have desired to do. I am most pleased when I have provided the people with an asset one after another.
Today the Korean people are visualizing a rosier future of their motherland from the appearance of Pyongyang that has been facelifted beyond recognition under the seasoned leadership of Comrade Kim Jong Un .
