There are many facilities across the DPRK which contribute to the promotion of the public wellbeing, namely the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, the Paektusan tourist and cultural area and the Onpho Working People’s Holiday Camp. They are associated with the wise leadership of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un .

Meeting Held in a Tent

One day in July 2024 Comrade Kim Jong Un presided over a consultative meeting, which was held in a tent on a beach on the east coast of the country.

The meeting dealt with practical issues for making full and foresighted preparations for the operation of the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area.

Comrade Kim Jong Un told the meeting that as the country is bordered by sea on its eastern and western sides and has many scenic spots along the east coast, including Mt Kumgang, Mt Chilbo, Majon, Kumya, Riwon and Yombunjin, it is needed to steadily implement the policy of concentrating on making rational use of the abundant coastal resources for tourism. And he called for taking long-term steps to exploit in a unique manner the resources of coastal tourism for sports, leisure activities and sightseeing.

The Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area was inaugurated in June the following year, showcasing a new phase of socialist civilization.

To Build a Popular Tourist Destination

One day in July 2024 Comrade Kim Jong Un gave field guidance to the construction project for Samjiyon City.

He said to the accompanying officials that the grand nature of the Mt Paektu area consisting of mountains and primeval forests is part of the precious resources of the country, of which it can be proud, and it is needed to build a popular tourist and cultural area of the world-famous Mt Paektu for the people at home and abroad. He went on to say that it is necessary to develop mountain tourism into a highly promising industry in conformity with the natural and geographical features of the country, in which the mountainous areas account for almost 80 percent of the whole territory, underlining the need to perfect legal and institutional mechanisms for protecting nature and environment as well.

Recently Samjiyon City surrounded by primeval forests and high mountains has been transformed into an all-season tourist area in which high- and low-rise apartment houses, catering facilities and neighbourhood-serving amenities are combined with one another in an organic way and all the architectural elements are in a perfect harmony.

Important Component of People-oriented Policies

In March 2025 Comrade Kim Jong Un visited the construction site of the Onpho Working People’s Holiday Camp.

Having set forth important tasks for the construction project and the future operation of the holiday camp, he told the accompanying officials that it is an important component of the people-oriented policies of the Party and government and a responsible undertaking to provide the working people with excellent treatment and recuperation facilities and more advanced service conditions for their maximum convenience.

It is the intention of our Party, he noted, to build modern holiday resorts and sanatoriums for the people, which blend well with the beautiful natural scenery, in famous mountains and scenic spots around the country, furnish them with a larger number of comprehensive service facilities, and thus make them serve as bases for cultural progress and contribute to a steady improvement of the life of the working masses.

Since its inauguration in January, the Onpho Working People’s Holiday Camp has been visited by many holidaymakers.
