The Pothong Riverside Terraced Houses District is located in Kyongru-dong in the heart of the capital city of Pyongyang.
One March day in 2021 the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un looked around the riverside area near the Pothong Gate, and revealed his plan for building a modern terraced residential quarter for people on the site of the old residence of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung .
He said that Comrade Kim Il Sung would probably be pleased if he knew that modern terraced houses were to be built for people on the site, and that he wonders if the great leader might have intentionally left such a good place vacant to help us.
Several days later, a groundbreaking ceremony of the Pothong Riverside Terraced Houses District took place.
One day in August 2021, when its construction was at its height, Comrade Kim Jong Un visited the construction site. He highly praised the builders for having finished the framework construction in several months after the groundbreaking ceremony. Then he asked what district the site belonged to.
After hearing an official’s answer, he was lost in thought for a while, and said that a new administrative district should be established and the administrative division of the Pothong Riverside Terraced Houses District should be named in such a meaningful way that it can symbolize the most beautiful terraced houses district in Pyongyang.
Looking round the officials, he suggested naming the district “Kyongru-dong” , saying that Kyongru is interpreted as a metaphor for a beautiful gem terrace or a “palace” in the dictionary.
On April 13, 2022, the Pothong Riverside Terraced Houses District was inaugurated with due ceremony in the presence of Comrade Kim Jong Un , and persons of merit, labour innovators and other ordinary working people moved into the luxurious houses.
